MRLA Legal Center: Addressing Social and Political Issues in the Workplace
For over a decade, restaurants have established policies and procedures for responding to employee speech that is potentially harmful or negative to the brand. The COVID-19 global pandemic heightened emphasis on social justice in the wake of several high-profile killings by the police, and the landmark court decision on abortion rights has added new layers of complication for restauranteurs to navigate, as they try to balance empathy for their workforce, with policy and legal compliance. Our new Legal Center partner, Adam Forman of Epstein Becker & Green P.C., hosted a webinar where he identified several legal and practical factors that operators should consider when responding to employees’ social and political communications in the workplace.

In a recent operations survey conducted by the MRLA, over 1/4 of respondents indicated that they were either in support of or undecided on support for a policy similar to New York City that requires a restaurant operator to verify proof of vaccination for guests. The MRLA is hosting a webinar to arm operators with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions.
